EQUIPMENT ASBESTOS
CONTAMINATION
The problem of dealing with hire
equipment that may be contaminated
with asbestos has raised its head again
so the HRIA is offering a reminder of
the legal and practical position for
members to help avoid any serious
safety breaches.
“From a legal point of view the HRIA
standard terms and conditions the
majority of members use for their
Master Agreements and hire schedules
cover this risk under the ‘Use operation
and maintenance’ clauses and the
‘Hirers Warranties’ clauses,” CEO Phil
Newby said.
“On the practical side make sure your
team is briefed on the risks of asbestos
and what to look out for. When
collecting from a site try and make your
transport team aware of what to look
for before they start loading the plant.
The majority of customers are well
aware of the risks of asbestos but there
will always be some who will try and
cover up the problem.
“If any materials or equipment is
contaminated, do not collect it but
advise the customer of the problem and
get them to make it safe for collection.
Do not be afraid to ask the client at the
start of the hire if asbestos is involved,
especially if the equipment being hired
is known to be used with asbestos
removal such as industrial cleaners.
Try and avoid these types of hires.
“There are heavy penalties relating to
asbestos contamination.”
