ACCESS in ACTION
Congratulations to Peter Davis, who was
presented with the Elevated Work Platform
Association (EWPA) President’s Award at the
2012 AGM held in Adelaide.
Peter was recognised for his outstanding
and continued support of the EWPA in
front of 50+ industry peers.
Peter has been working closely with
the association, fellow rental industry
members and a variety of State and Federal
regulatory bodies over the past two years
on a number of projects to ensure the
access industry is well heard and respected
in providing guidance and compliance
regarding the safe use of Mobile Elevating
Work Platforms (MEWP’s).
The EWPA is the peak representative
body of this specialised industry here in
Australia, with over 700 members
comprising rental companies, trainers,
OEM’s, owners and repairers.
The EWPA has in place a nationally
recognised operator training program also
known as the “Yellow Card”. This involves a
structured training program covering safety,
hazard evaluation, pre-operational checks,
operation of the various types of EWP’s and
more. It is carried out by EWPA Accredited
Trainers who are all nationally accredited
workplace trainers.
Congratulations to Peter for his
commitment to the access industry, the
industry association and Coates. It is well
deserved and the industry applauds his
efforts for going that extra step.
The Award was made at the EWPA AGM
in early September where Tim Nuttall of
Access Hire in Melbourne took on the role
of National President for another year.
He was thanked for his ‘above and
beyond’ efforts this year particularly in the
area of PPSA and the ongoing problem of
non-compliant EWPs.
Honour for EWPA President’s Award recipient
The SA AGM was
held the same time as
the national AGM with
Mike Williams agreeing
to take on the
challenge of State
President for another
year but stressed after
nine years in the role
it was time to step
down and encouraged
SA members to get
involved and take up
the challenge.

From 1 January 2013, IPAF rental
company members in the UK must
report any known mobile elevating work
platform (MEWP) accidents involving their
staff at the IPAF accident database
(www.ipaf.org/accident).
Peter Douglas, chairman of the IPAF UK
Country Council said: “We need to make
the industry safer. The data collected will
help indicate the most common high risk
behaviours. And if we can reduce those
risky behaviours, we will gradually reduce
the number of fatal and serious accidents.”
“The initial mandate is for UK rental
companies to report all lost time incidents
for their employees,” Peter said. “But all
members are strongly encouraged to get
on board and report all accidents, near
misses and contractor incidents.
Accident reporting mandatory for IPAF
“Companies who commit to report
accidents at the IPAF database will be able
to confidentially record data and create
their own register of accidents,” said IPAF
technical officer Chris Wraith. “The system
requires companies to ‘sign off’ monthly
on their accident records. In return, a
dashboard feature analyses the company
data in a graphical format, providing
a management tool to monitor safety
performance. Individual companies will be
able to compare their safety performance
against aggregated results from across all
rental company members and recognised
industry benchmarks.”
All manufacturers, rental companies,
contractors and users are encouraged
to report accidents involving MEWPs
worldwide at www.ipaf.org/accident
