The January 30 deadline

has passed and the Personal

Property Security Act has

become law, but our industry is

still coming to terms with this

legislation and its impact.

It appears there is still a lot

of confusion in the industry

with varied approaches being

addressed by individual hire

businesses. One thing is for sure,

hire businesses do need to take

action, one way or another.

To help smooth the way, the

HRIA has been busy tackling

the issue with legal input from

advisors, Bartier Perry. Advice

has been made available via

the HRIA web site and the

association has ensured the

services of its legal advisors

are accessible to all members.

It is important members seek

legal advice to ensure they

are protecting their assets and

meeting the criteria of the new

legislation.

The PPSA is confusing

legislation and interpretation

remains open. But, the

HRIA is seeking to address

member concerns by making

amendment submissions to

the Attorney General and fine

tuning terms and conditions.

This legislation will have a

major impact on our industry,

so it is essential members are

proactive in tackling this issue.

The association can advise

but because of the individual

nature of member businesses,

individual solutions need to be

considered.

While we’re discussing

legislation, it is a good time to

remind members of the recent

changes to the Fair Work Act

and award modernisation.

Again our association has

provided help and advice with

the introduction of HRNet -

an online service providing

workplace relations support.

With the assistance of Mason

Sier Turnbull (MST), HRNet is

intended as a useful resource

for workplace relations

information, including:

• factsheets on employer

workplace obligations;

• modern award information;

• practical templates used for

employees; and

• information on the new Fair

Work Act and the 10 National

Employment Standards.

As an employer, it is critical

members pay employees

according to industry specific

regulations. Links from the

HRIA web site provide FAQs and

advice on meeting employee

conditions.

Finally, another Convention

is upon us and once again on

the Gold Coast. I know I am

looking forward to a great few

days of learning, and checking

out the latest and greatest in

equipment. With these tighter

economic times our convention

offers a wonderful opportunity

to network, share experiences

and learn from one another.

Our association is renowned for

its networking and this year will

be no different.

The HRIA always puts on

a great show with excellent

speakers, and a varied social

program. And let’s not forget

our suppliers and the excellent

displays they put on.

The trade exhibition and

Equipment in Action Day is

open to anyone involved in hire.

All Convention information is

available online at:

www.hireandrental.com.au

It is also when our national

industry awards are presented,

showcasing the best among us.

And that is always a highlight.

So, I’ll look forward to seeing

you there and catching up,

either on the trade floor, in the

field or at the Sofitel!
