HRIA Trials Electrification Course

Hire Industry Training, the consolidated banner for the HRIA, EWPA and TSHA’s portfolio of Learning & Development offerings, has a clear mandate; to provide tailored L&D offerings that benefit the access and wider equipment hire industry.
Over the last few years, the industry has witnessed an ongoing move towards electrification of access and general construction equipment. Certainly, the introduction of new ESG legislation coming into effect as of 1st January 2025, will not see this trend abate anytime soon.
This electrification trend has seen new opportunities unlocked and indeed new challenges uncovered. Certainly, the ability to provide documentation of “competent” service and maintenance staff, as defined by Australian Standards, has been a speed bump as these new pieces of equipment come onto the market.
In early April, working off the success of its EWP Electronics and Hydraulics workshop model, Hire Industry Training piloted its new “Safety, Maintenance and Inspection of Electric Powered Plant” workshop. Utilising the TAFE QLD’s Electric Vehicle skillset as a base point, the pilot featured comprehensive theory teamed with heavy practical components. Utlilising one of TAFE QLD’s in-house electric excavators and an electric boom lift (kindly provided by Access Service Australia), the 3-day workshop allowed participants to develop practical kills to safely de-energise, inspect and re-energise this new generation of equipment.
“Initial feedback from the pilot has been overwhelmingly positive” remarked HRIA National Training Consultant Nicolas Chiew. “Key to the development of this workshop has been the ongoing collaboration with our members and the facilitation with TAFE QLD to develop an offering that meets training needs both now and into the future. Our aim is to roll this new workshop out nationally in Q3 with the potential for participants to be issued with Statements of Attainment for the AURETH101 and AURETH102 Units of Competency”.
