NEWS IN BRIEF
NEW TO HIRE GUIDE
With thanks to the ARA we now have a
New to Hire’ Guide booklet which can
be viewed on the HRIA webpage. It is
aimed at new members who want to
become involved in this industry and
covers the key areas of what is required
to get started safely and legally.
TEST AND TAGGING -
CHANGES
From 15 March 2013 anyone who
wishes to gain a nationally recognised
qualification to test and tag must
complete an additional unit covering
basic OHS and the application of the
latest regulations and codes of practice.
All registered training organisations
(
RTO’s) delivering the unit must deliver
the new unit after 15 March. The HRIA
advises anyone who has already gained
the current unit is not required to
upgrade and their current qualification
will still be recognised. Test & Tag
Training conduct courses weekly in all
states. Contact 1300 848 302.
EVENTS DIVISION UPDATE
The Events Division is seeking changes
to the Discrimination and Disability
Act in relation to temporary structures
and has made a submission to the
Australian Building Codes Board in
an attempt to re-word some aspects
of the Act and to redefine temporary
structures.
ABCB and Temporary Structures
The Disability and Discrimination
Act has started to cause some issues
regarding responsibilities in Victoria. In
addition the Australian Building Code
Committee is reviewing fire ratings and
more on Temporary Structures used for
public events. This can have serious
consequences for HRIA members. The
Association has become involved with
relevant parties to try to establish a
unified or harmonised ruling.
Disability and Discrimination
Act (DDA) and Events in Public
Places
The DDA will affect how temporary
equipment is set up at events in public
places. This means events and festivals
and covers things like portable toilets,
marquees, access ramps and more.

JCB has marked the
production of its half millionth
backhoe loader in its World HQ
in Rocester, Staffordshire UK.
The first backhoe rolled off
the production line in Rocester,
Staffordshire in 1953. Called
the Mark One, it brought the
new wonder
of hydraulic
power to
construction
equipment
for the first
time.
In the first
full year of
production
in 1954 just
35
of the
machines
were built
and it took more than 20
years for the first 50,000 to be
made. Today, one JCB backhoe
loader rolls off the company’s
production lines every three
minutes.
Despite the maturity of
the versatile backhoe loader,
In January, in response to
the bushfire crisis in Tasmania,
Coates Hire shipped an
additional crucial supply of
equipment to those affected by
the bushfires.
Garry Brown, Tasmanian
Area Manager said: “At Coates
Hire, we believe having such a
broad reach comes with a lot
More generators for Tasmania
of responsibility, particularly in
the local communities around
Australia. The demand on our
power division was enormous
and outstripped our supply
level. In anticipation of further
demand and to meet the
continued long term power
outages, Coates Hire alleviated
the issue by transporting
portable generators from
Victoria,” Garry said.
The company also made
building and toilet facilities
available in the short term to
affected residences, including
buildings with kitchen facilities
and air conditioning.

Half a million and counting for JCB
it is still one of the biggest
selling pieces of construction
machinery and remains the
world’s fourth most popular
machine in the construction
equipment sales league table,
the company said.
JCB has always invested
heavily in its backhoe loader
range and an early catalyst for
growth was in 1980 which saw
the £24 million launch of the
3
CX. Today, customers enjoy
the fuel saving benefits of JCB
backhoes powered by the JCB
Ecomax engine, which saves up
to 11% in fuel costs.
The 500,000th JCB backhoe
