JCB plans to begin production of six
cylinder engines with the addition of the
JCB Dieselmax 672 to its engine line-up.
In just over eight years JCB has
gone from a new entrant to engine
manufacturing to a major global producer
with a reputation for fuel efficiency and
innovation. The first engine rolled off the
production line in the UK in November
2004
and since then production has also
extended to JCB India’s HQ at Ballabgarh,
where the first engine was manufactured
in 2011. To date more than 250,000
engines have been produced globally.
The introduction of the new 6 cylinder
engine represents an investment of around
£45 million.
The JCB Dieselmax 672 is based on the
company’s successful four-cylinder 4.8-litre
Dieselmax engine, with a high degree of
parts commonality across the two engine
platforms. In production for more than
eight years, with many engines running
reliably after more than 20,000 hours of
service around the world, the Dieselmax
engine features electronic control, Delphi

General Manager Doug McQuinn said.
The first two units arrived in Australia
in June and will be available for sale
through our dealer network,” Doug said.
The new model features a Hino P11C-
VC six-cylinder common rail engine that
delivers 10% more productivity and better
fuel efficiency than the previous model,
the SK480LC-8.

Initially the Dieselmax 672 will be
produced to meet Stage II emissions
standards, for growth markets including
Russia, Brazil and China. The engine will be
seen first in JCB’s JS360 crawler excavator
for those territories, but will be used in
additional machines as time progresses.
The six-cylinder engine will be offered
with ratings of 140kW (188hp), 165kW
(221
hp), 190kW (255hp) and with a
maximum output of 225kW (302hp).
Maximum torque is 1,200Nm. JCB has
also produced an efficient engine in the
Dieselmax 672, promising up to an 8%
increase in fuel efficiency compared to
previous engines in the JS excavator line. In
testing, the 7.2-litre engine recorded fuel
consumption of just 189g/kWh.
The six-cylinder engines will be built on
a dedicated line at JCB Power Systems’
modern purpose-built facility in Foston,
Derbyshire, UK. In development for
more than two years, the engines have
completed over 50,000 hours of testing.
The Dieselmax engines have 500-
hour service intervals, maintaining low
operating costs and maximum uptime for
customers. The engines will also be offered
for use in non-JCB machinery.

The Tier 4A Hino engine in the
SK500LC-9 uses an EGR cooler which helps
combustion and a DPR filter results in
reduced emissions,” Doug said.
Meanwhile, more engine torque and
intelligent’ hydraulics give you faster cycle
times to get more work done.”
The new machines will feature Kobelco’s
H-mode and S-mode options for heavy-
duty and standard work, and ECO mode.
ECO mode delivers fuel savings of up
to 13% and increases the work volume per
litre of fuel by 8%. Compared with earlier
models, the latest unit also
gives 5.4% higher engine
power and a maximum
torque increase of 5%.”
Doug said in addition to
the improved productivity,
the new model offers
enhanced safety and
comfort.
The new cab has rollover
protection and is certified
to 56,000kg to cater for
large front attachments.
The cab has falling object
protection (FOPS) and its
roomy dimensions make it
comfortable for operators
as well as offering plenty of
storage space.
The cab is designed for minimal
vibration and is pressurised to eliminate
dust. You get excellent rear visibility thanks
to the low engine cover and a wide-angle
rear view camera that comes standard.
Kobelco’s Intelligent Control System
recognises the operator’s moves and assists
by providing power when and where it is
needed. Cushioned transitions between
functions reduce jerkiness during high
speed movements.”
The new model features a seven inch
colour monitor with easy-to-read controls
and an attachment mode that allows the
operator to program 10 different flow and
pressure settings to accommodate a wide
variety of attachments.
The SK500LC-9 is a robust excavator with
an operating weight of almost 50,000kg –
significantly heavier than earlier models.
The model features a high capacity
hydraulic system that can be adjusted from
inside the cab and two auxiliary hydraulic
modes that let you switch between one-
way and two-way flow, again without
leaving the cab.”
A selection of buckets and couplers are
available.
