CraneSafe Inspection Program
“Telescopic handlers, when used
specifically as a crane, must also meet the
requirements of an independent third party
inspection and we have two categories for
rigid frames and rotating frames. These
units when used as a crane are inspected
using the same criteria as a crane and
assures building sites when a CraneSafe
‘Green Sticker’ is attached, the
site personnel can be sure it is
safe to use as a crane at time of
inspection.
“Overall, CraneSafe has been
in existence for just over 10 years
and has inspected 9,966 different
serial number units, 36,167 different times
and a total of 41,162 faults have been
detected. Grey imports have been widely
detected, and these units must meet the
relevant Australian Standard before gaining
a tick of approval from CraneSafe.
“The end result for the crane industry is
we have a consistent level of safety across
the whole spectrum.”

The CraneSafe Inspection program was
developed voluntarily by the mobile crane
industry to provide an independent third
party annual inspection service for cranes
used in Australia.
Developed in consultation with the
mobile crane industry, the program aims
to augment existing safety standards
with annual assessments of
mobile cranes now being made
by CraneSafe (a division of the
Crane Industry Council of Australia
– CICA).
The CraneSafe assessment
program provides crane owners
and operators with:
• a process for third party assessment of
safety aspects of cranes
• a common, industry-wide system for
assessment of cranes
• a single method by which crane
operators, owners, manufacturers,
suppliers, designers and importers may
fulfil relevant duty of care obligations
under the State Occupational Health and
Safety Acts (OH&S).
The CraneSafe assessment program
is voluntary however crane owners and
users have a duty of care obligation under
individual State OH&S (Plant) Regulations to
ensure their cranes are in a safe condition.
According to Jeff Brundell, CraneSafe
National Director, initially there was no
direct need to have third party inspections
as mandated in AS2550-1 2011 7.3.4,
however the industry embraced the inde-
pendent aspect at the introduction in 2002
and has remained the same ever since.
“Currently we have 25 different
assessments which are all in the AS1418 and
AS2550 family of lifting equipment.
“Originally we only had six different
assessments but through industry requests,
we have developed further speciality
products directly related to cranes.
“Telescopic handlers, when used specifically as
a crane, must also meet the requirements of an
independent third party inspection...”
